Now that the summer months are officially behind us, it is a very good idea to start helping the immune system with the right nutrients so that it will be prepared to defend us against any unwanted pathogens that like to linger around in colder weather. It is also wonderful for gut health and each ingredient plays its own role for better well-being.

There is something empowering about being ready for those darker days and longer nights and knowing, that we look after our health and the health of our family to our best knowledge. Let’s take an example from the generations before ours, who intuitively knew how to make the best out of each season of the year and how to get themselves ready for the next one that was coming.

This Immunity Elixir is not only inexpensive and quick to make but tasty too. You may alter the ingredients to your own preferences and to what feels right. I like to take it in the morning after breakfast but taking it in the evening after a meal is okay as well.

What will you need ?

  • blender
  • sieve
  • glass airtight jar
  • lemons: 1 & 1/2 pc
  • ginger: 3 inches in length/1 & 1/2 inches in width
  • turmeric: 1 & 1/2 inches in length
  • honey: 2 tablespoons
  • black peppercorns: 10 pc
  • cloves: 20 pc
  • water: 200 ml

Method

  • add water, chopped ginger, chopped turmeric and black peppercorns into a blender or food processor and blend for a couple of minutes until smooth consistency
  • there is no need to peel the ginger and turmeric, just give them a good wash and carefully scrub the skin
  • when done, use a sieve to strain the the mixture into a bowl
  • now add juice from squeezed lemons, honey and mix together
  • transfer to a glass airtight jar
  • lastly, add cloves

Lasts up to two months when stored in the fridge. Remove or sieve cloves before serving – although biting and eating it won’t certainly harm you! As a serving guide, I use a small shot glass for myself and slightly less for my children daily. If this is something you’d like to introduce to your children and they’re not used to ginger/turmeric taste, add smaller amounts and complement with more honey. As they’ll become accustomed to taste, you may alter ingredients accordingly.

Enjoy!
